Casino Zögernitz in Vienna: A Historic Music Venue Since 1837

Visitors entering the House of Strauss in Vienna's Döbling district are stepping into a building with almost two centuries of history.

The historic Casino Zögernitz opened in 1837 and became a venue for music, dancing and Viennese social life.

Today, the protected historic building is home to the House of Strauss. Long before it became a museum, however, Casino Zögernitz was already part of Vienna's vibrant entertainment culture.

What Did “Casino” Mean in 19th-Century Vienna?

The name can be misleading today.

In 19th-century Vienna, a “casino” was not primarily associated with gambling. It was a social and entertainment venue.

Typical activities included:

  • concerts and dancing
  • balls and celebrations
  • dining
  • garden events
  • performances by popular orchestras and conductors

During the Biedermeier period, Vienna's suburbs became increasingly popular leisure destinations.

Döbling offered a combination of countryside, vineyards, restaurants and entertainment.

It was in this environment that Casino Zögernitz emerged.

The Opening in 1837

Casino Zögernitz opened in 1837 at what is today Döblinger Hauptstraße 76.

Music was central to the venue from its earliest days.

Johann Strauss I was involved in the musical programme at the time of its opening, beginning a remarkable relationship between the venue and the Strauss family.

The Zögernitz was part of the same musical world as other major figures of Viennese dance music, including Joseph Lanner.

It opened at exactly the time when the Viennese waltz was developing from popular dance music into an international cultural phenomenon.

Johann Strauss II at Casino Zögernitz

The future “Waltz King”, Johann Strauss II, also performed at Casino Zögernitz.

During the 1840s and 1850s, the venue hosted a variety of musical events connected with the young conductor.

One particularly fascinating chapter is the Revolution of 1848.

Strauss responded to the political developments of the period through music. His Freiheits-Lieder, Op. 52 – “Songs of Freedom” were among the works performed at the Zögernitz.

The venue therefore reflects more than the history of entertainment.

Music, politics and social change came together here.

A Spectacular Celebration in 1850

Johann Strauss II understood that a successful musical event could involve much more than an orchestra.

In 1850, he organised a major celebration at Casino Zögernitz with a ball, illumination and fireworks.

For the occasion, he composed the waltz Johannis-Käferln, Op. 82.

Music was combined with:

  • lighting
  • decoration
  • dancing
  • dining
  • spectacular entertainment

to create a complete experience.

This idea remains surprisingly relevant to the House of Strauss today.

The Historic Strauss Hall

At the heart of the building is the historic Strauss Hall.

It is not a modern reconstruction of a 19th-century concert hall.

The room itself is part of Vienna's musical history.

Members of the Strauss dynasty performed here, and the hall continued to be used for music across generations.

Following an extensive restoration, it once again hosts classical concerts today.

From Casino Zögernitz to the House of Strauss

Many of Vienna's historic 19th-century entertainment venues have disappeared.

Casino Zögernitz is one of the rare surviving examples of this musical culture.

Following extensive restoration, the historic complex returned to cultural use and the House of Strauss opened in 2023.

Today, visitors can experience:

  • an interactive museum
  • the history of Viennese music
  • the story of the Strauss dynasty
  • an authentic historic concert hall
  • live classical concerts

The Zögernitz is therefore not simply a building where history is remembered.

It is a historic music venue that is alive once again.
